Important Bingo Announcement

Committee Notice

Following a Committee Meeting at Carmarthen Quins RFC on Wednesday 13th April 2022 the following unanimous decision was taken:

With immediate effect Bingo will no longer be played in the public bar area or the adjoining Lounge.

Bingo will continue to be available downstairs but will be restricted to the Players Bar and the Coracle Room where there is more than adequate space for those wishing to participate.

Carmarthen Quins RFC is a community establishment, and it is important that we ensure our clubhouse is available to accommodate members and visitors with different interests.

The Committee has made this decision in the best interests of everyone concerned and it is hoped that those wishing to take part will continue to enjoy the excellent facilities on offer at the club.

Big Weekend of Rugby

This week and weekend is as big an event that the club has seen for a while. Rugby across the whole club features between yesterday evening (Wednesday 6th April) through to Sunday when all our players are in some sort of action.

Last night the return of the Jesters Hub continued with many girls from under 7’s through to under 18’s taking part in fun sessions focussing on the core rugby skills and there were smiles all round. There is still plenty of space for you to join and for more details follow our Social Media channels or email d4ddo@hotmail.co.uk

Tonight the competitive rugby kicks off with our Under 11’s playing against Carmarthen Athletic in what is always an entertaining game full of skills from both sets of players.

On Friday (8th April) the local rivalries continue with our Youth Team hosting Carmarthen Athletic in a double header that serves as a cup game and a league game. The teams have met once this season with the Quins running out the victors. As always with local derbies this could go either way as both sides fight for the Town Bragging Rights. Kick off in the park is at 7pm and the more support there the merrier.

Saturday our 1st XV continue their road to the end of the season with their last away game of the campaign. They head East to Ebbw Vale looking to build on their last outing which saw them secure a bonus point victory in Merthyr. Its been a long stop start season but the Seniors will be looking to end the season on a high and as high up the table as they possibly can.

With the starters finished on Saturday the club moves on to the main course with the Carmarthenshire Cup Finals day in Llandeilo RFC where four of our Junior sides are in action in Cup Finals. It is an unprecedented success for the section having so many teams in the finals. Only the 14’s missed out and that was probably due to a bad run of luck on the injury front but they will look to bounce back next season.

The first game to kick off is the Under 12’s who will take on Newcastle Emlyn at 10am, followed by the Under 13s who take on Amman United at 11.30am, then the Under 15’s take on Lampeter at 2.30pm and last but not least the Under 16’s take on Llandeilo kicking off at 4pm.

In what is going to be a great day for rugby all round any additional support would be welcomed by all teams.

There will be team news brought to you from some of the sides prior to the games which after a harsh two years of Covid will be a memory in the making for the young Quins.

Also on Sunday our Under 7’s and Under 9’s take on the Athletic and Athletic Park both kicking off at 9.30am.

With the club’s 150th Anniversary on the horizon it is great to see so many players involved with club and it is continuing to grow. If you like what you see or hear then why not become part of it there are opportunities for many so please get in touch.

Call for more players and volunteers for the resurrected Girls Hub.

Last Wednesday 23rd March 2022 saw the Girls Hub start to resurrect itself with a registration event held in Abergwili for the newly named Carmarthen Jesters.

The event is aimed at girls from the age of 7 to 18 to take up the great game. Covid hit all sports hard but none more so than girls specific rugby here in Carmarthen. With work ongoing prior to the pandemic to restart the hub it was more or less wiped out over the next two years due to Covid.

Officials from the Quins mini and junior section have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to get this back up and running and give the girls of Carmarthen and surrounding areas a chance to try rugby.

A good number of girls turned out last Wednesday but the hub needs more and this coming Wednesday 30th March they were will be another opportunity to register your interest yourself or for your female relatives.

Registration for all will be available from 5.30pm to 6.30pm with a training session for those younger girls between ages 7 and 11. Training for the older age groups will commence the following week on 6th April.

In addition to players we would also like to call on volunteers for the positions of coaches and team managers. Officials of the mini and junior section will provide as much support as possible and there is the opportunity for interested individuals to undertake rugby specific coaching courses to allow the sport to grow.

The location is the Club’s training facility in Abergwili where you will all receive a warm welcome and we look forward to seeing you. If you would like to have more details then please email Neil on d4ddo@hotmail.co.uk

We hope the resurgence of the Senior Wales Women’s team with their victory last weekend will be a catalyst for more to join.

Former Club Treasurer and Staunch Clubman the Late Mr Islwyn Morgan

The club is saddened to learn of the passing of Claudia Ivy Morgan the wife of the late Islwyn Morgan.

Affectionately know as Islwyn Chips on account of him and Claudia owning Morgans Chip Shop for many, many years, Islwyn was a tremendous servant and supporter to Carmarthen Quins holding the role of treasurer for many years from 1981.

Claudia passed away peacefully on 21st February and the club are able to share the funeral details which will be held on Saturday 19th March at 10.30am at Elim, Ffynonddrain.

All at the club would like to pass on the sincere condolences to all the family at this sad time.

Club Membership Secretary Recruitment

Expressions of Interest – Membership Secretary

Our current Membership Secretary, Keith Bond, is standing down at the end of the current season
after many years of first-class service to the club. The Chairman and Committee are extremely
grateful for Keith’s professionalism and dedication to the organisation.

Expressions of interest are therefore sought to take over the role of Membership Secretary of
Carmarthen Quins RFC for the 2022/23 rugby season and beyond.

This is an important position in terms of the business interests of Carmarthen RFC and is a key role in
managing the administration of current and future members, including life members and Patrons of
the club.

In general terms, the Membership Secretary will be primarily responsible for:
a) Managing and maintaining the club membership database.
b) Corresponding with existing members with a view to renewing memberships on an annual
basis.
c) Processing new members applications.
d) Producing and distributing annual membership cards.
e) Banking membership fees as required.
f) Submission of periodic reports for the consideration of the Chairman and Committee.
g) Complying with data protection legislation in relation to retention and disposal of
confidential personal data.

Whilst this is a voluntary role, the person in question should be well organised and demonstrate
accuracy and attention to detail. Proficiency in IT and communication skills, written and oral, are
desirable.

Membership of the general committee is not a pre-requisite of the post however the new secretary
will be encouraged to work closely with the Committee with the aim of attracting new business to
the club.

It would be advantageous to appoint a suitable candidate in a timely fashion to ensure a smooth
transition of the role ahead of the 2022/23 season.

A Tribute to Aubrey Davies

The Club were saddened to hear of the death of former outside half, D Aubrey Davies who represented the Club from season 1965/66 until 1972/73.

In total he played 92 times for the 1sts XV during this period.

He played for an outstanding Swansea University side in the mid 60s that won the UAU title at Twickenham.

He also taught in Perth, West Australia and played cricket and rubbed shoulders with Test legends, Denis Lillee, Graham McKenzie and Doug Walters.

Wishing Tristan Evans a Speedy Recovery

The club was shocked to hear that one of our promising Under 10 players Tristan Evans has recently undergone surgery to remove a brain tumour. Tristan is now recovering at home and gaining strength on a daily basis.
Tristan father Gareth is no stranger to the Quins having played for the seniors and is now coach of the under 13s team and Angharad is team manager of the Under 10s/11s so its a real Quins affair.
In true Quins style the stress has not gone unnoticed and Haydn Pugh called to present Tristan with a signed shirt from all the 1st XV players.
All at the club wish Tristan and the family our very best wishes for the future and a full recovery so Tristan can get back on the rugby field and continue his journey to be a Mighty Quin which after what he has had to face in recent weeks should be a walk in the park for him. As you can see from the first picture Tristan’s strength is shining through his smile.
