On a day that was more akin to a mid-summer Saturday afternoon than the depths of autumnal October, the on lookers at Carmarthen Park were treated to a try fest as Quins brushed Pontypool’s challenge aside.
In the fifth round of Super Rygbi Cymru, Quins welcomed Pooler to Carmarthen Park looking to bounce back from what was a disappointing result against Cardiff at the Arms Park a week previously.
The park has become happy hunting ground for the Quins with nine tries scored in the two home games, and despite needing a confident start on Saturday it was Pontypool who came out of the blocks on fire.
Two early tries, a conversion and penalty saw Pooler march away with a 0-15 lead in the opening ten minutes.
Quins remained composed hitting back with two of their own before the half hour mark, with scrum half Rhodri Davies and Eilir George safely over the whitewash. A conversion and penalty from outside half Aled Thomas saw Quins level pegging at 15-15 by the 40-minute mark.
The home side came out firing on all cylinders to get the second half underway, with tries from newcomer Jac Howells and a 6th try of the season for hooker Lewis Morgan.
It was Quins who led the way from there on in, scoring another two tries, another for hooker Morgan and a 79thminute try for prop Rhys Fawcett.
Pontypool added another brace of their own, keeping the pressure on the home team, but couldn’t regain their earlier lead.
Final score: Carmarthen Quins 41 Pontypool 31
