Youth Training Arrangements

The Quins Youth will resume training on Tuesday 3rd August and are looking for players to join our young but talented squad.

With the new WRU age grade for youth rugby being introduced over the summer we welcome players of all positions and abilities who will be in school years 12 & 13 from September.

The club is looking forward to continuing Youth rugby at the club and this is an excellent time to join a team with excellent coaching and playing facilities.

Training will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with coaches Gary Evans, Wayne Proctor & Cen Powell. Gary has been coaching this group of players since Under 7’s having played for the Quins for many years and giving his all in playing as he does coaching. Cen joined when the current squad were under 9’s having previously played for the Quins in his younger days then moved to London and represented the Grasshoppers, London Welsh and Middlesex County. Former Scarlet and Welsh International Wayne joined in the last two seasons and brings an added dimension to the already successful coaching partnership.

All players are welcome to turn up on the evening or contact Gary (07855 769744) or Cen (07786 373697) for a chat and specific training arrangements.

The Quins prides itself on developing rugby players  from under 7’s upwards and hope that we can play a small part in their rugby journey. With the change in rules for Youth rugby we have a Seconds XV for those who are over 18 who wish to continue their journey. It was a testament to this ethos that over the last weekend when Wales took on Canada the following individuals were involved with the Welsh Squad.

Stephen Jones – Former Quins Youth Player now Welsh Attack Coach

Gareth Williams – A destructive flanker who represented the Quins over 100 times is now a coach with the Welsh team.

Josh Turnbull – Played for the Quins and will now coach with us when our 1st XV is back playing

Ryan Elias – played 45 games for the 1st XV while on his rugby journey before turning professional.

Kieran Hardy – 55 Quins appearances for the 1st  XV

Gareth Thomas – 56 Quins appearances for the 1st XV.

Whilst not all the players had come through our mini, junior and youth system the Quins have played a big  part in their careers. Tumble, Pontyberem, Newcastle Emlyn and Carmarthen Athletic should be proud of what they started.
Not forgetting young Eddie James a recent Quins youth player who is now representing Wales Under 20s following in the recent footsteps of Jac Price and Osian Knott and many others before them. The Quins offers an environment that encourages not only rugby development but social development for players of all ages and abilities.
We look forward to watching our Youth take the field when they can and hope you our supporters do also.

Mini and Junior Rugby Update

Our Mini and Junior Section is back and it is just like we haven’t been away. The training sessions have been well attended across the age groups and many new players have joined the club either returning to rugby or having their first taste of our great game.

With our 4 mini pitches at the back of Abergwili, two full size pitches and a training area there is more than sufficient room for our teams to train, but as a responsible club we stagger our training across the age groups so that we ensure we adhere to current Government guidelines.

As it currently stands training for each age group is as follows, although these are subject to change and up to date information will be posted on the Mini and Junior Twitter account:

Match Report – Carmarthen Quins RFC 19-21 Swansea RFC

Quins  19  Swansea  21

Elis Lloyd led the Quins out with his new son to mark his 200th game for the Quins, and a warm reception from the crowd.

The Park was once again at its most magnificent best with the weather near perfect. With just two changes from the Neath victory, the players responded by winning the opening line out after the Swansea throw in, and the first set piece saw the  Quins shunt the All White pack a full 10-yards setting the scene for the rest of the match. The conditions favoured open play and the players were in the same mood, so the early play was fast and furious, a 4th minute penalty was missed by Aled Thomas, but the Quins were able to keep most of the action in the Whites 22.

Mid way through the half the Quins were camped on the Swansea line and amazingly after Five scrums and with the visitors in complete disarray the referee failed to award the obvious penalty try,but five penalties in close succession, to the dissatisfaction of the home support. It was embarrassing to all when he eventually gave one of the Swansea props a yellow card. It was after the fifth penalty in as many minutes that Skipper Haydn Pugh, that their play was not going to rewarded and elected to kick at Goal which was duly converted by Aled Thomas after 27 minutes.

The Quins kept up their pressure and after a line out near the visitors  line, Javan Sebastian was able to crash over for the long awaited try. Aled Thomas added the points. With the half into injury time Phil Jones end the first 40 with a penalty for Swansea.

The Quins enthusiasm was marred with a series of dropped passes and chances were missed to make the game safe. This gave Phil Jones to pull another three points back with his second penalty. More Quins pressing kept play in the Swansea half and Aled Thomas was on hand to score his 700th point for the Quins with his second penalty. Phil Jones was on hand soon after with his third penalty, keeping Swansea in the game. After the hour mark, Aled Thomas put over his third penalty.

With five minutes remaining Aled Thomas slotted his fourth penalty, and things looked good for the Quins leading 19-9. In the dying minutes of normal play the Swansea team were able to scramble into the Quins half and Callum Carson was credited with a try which was drop converted from the touchline by Jones with time running out for the All Whites, and this brought them to within  a sniff of a win at 19-16 down.

Indiscipline and wrong decisions by the Quins let Swansea back into the Quins half and then into the 22 and a move down the right  saw Alex Jeffries going over at the corner flag and without hesitation the man with the whistle awarded a try in the 85th minute, the missed conversion was the last touch of the game and the Quins were denied the deserved victory that they had richly earned.

This result keeps Swansea  ahead of the Quins and 17 points clear from Llanelli RFC in 11th spot. With just two home games remaining, the Quins hope that their place in next seasons Premier is assured.

Join us again in the park next week as we host Ebbw Vale RFC on Saturday 6th April Kick Off 2:30pm

RIP – PAUL REES

Carmarthen Quins RFC would like to pass on their sincere condolences to the family of Paul Rees, who tragically passed away at the weekend.

Paul played for the Quins 2nds between 2009-2012 and was instrumental in helping that team win a number of league titles and also reach 2 Cup Finals

RIP-Paul Rees forever in our thoughts.

Match Report – Neath RFC 15-38 Carmarthen Quins RFC

Neath  15    Quins  38

The Quins put a frustrating run of matches well and  truly behind them at the Gnoll with a fine bonus point victory and five well taken tries.

The doomed All Blacks in fairness put up a spirited resistance and always looked to move the ball when in possession, but all their efforts  were dented with well drilled Quins tackling. The early minutes set out the pattern for the afternoon as both sides were bent on moving the ball, to the admiration of the decent crowd.

A Neath passing bout was intercepted near the half way to put Dale Ford away on a 50 meter run in under the posts after 10 minutes for Aled Thomas to convert. Almost from the re start the Quins powered up field and after a series of mauls, gained possession for three players  to handle to find Aron Hemmings  free to cross near the posts. Aled Thomas slotted the conversion.

The Quins line out  was back to its competent best taking play up to the 20 minute mark before the All Blacks got into the Quins half and gain  a penalty which Jordan Rees converted. Pressure from the Quins eight took play into the home 22. From a set piece five meters out, the home side expected a Quins push allowing Aron Hemmings to catch them out and he darted away  from the scrum to cross for a clever try, Aled Thomas converted. Richard Bloomfield, back from injury, was having a field day and was supported by Ed  Siggery and Javan Sebastian, giving the home eight little chance of getting out of this stranglehold.

With the second period barely a minute old a clever kick out wide  found space for Jon Bayliss to run on to and go over in the corner only to see the conversion sail well wide. This was answered by Aled Thomas on target with a 44th minute penalty. With a bonus point on the table, the Quins were all out to oblige and after a series of attacks which took play up to the Neath posts  Hemmings switched play to his left and the overlap gave Torin Myhill space to go over in the corner, for the well deserved extra reward, Aled Thomas was on hand with the kick. The All Blacks heads were down and this enabled Aled Thomas to weave his magic and go over for the Quins fifth try and he moved his Match total to 13 with the kick. The Quins were in rampant mood and some exciting running deep into injury time saw Dylan Morgan break away only to see his pass back inside caught by the Neath cover and they started a counter attack which caught the Quins flat footed and result in Callum Hall crossing for a consolation try to end the match.

This performance will no doubt put them in good spirits for the visit of Swansea next Saturday and gain revenge for their unlucky defeat at St Helens early this season. This win puts them 18 points clear of the 5th from bottom Club and ease the relegation threat considerably. So come to the Park next Saturday and spur the boys home

Team Selection – Neath RFC v Carmarthen Quins RFC

Following the success of our National squad last weekend winning the Grand Slam, we are back to the action this week as we take on the Welsh All Blacks, Neath RFC. Neath have had their fair share of troubles over the last few months but it is great to see their commitment and determination to keep this historical club going, which we congratulate them hugely.

Our last game against Bridgend RFC ended with a disappointing loss so we are looking to bounce back at the Gnoll on Saturday to earn a victory and any extra points we can to keep away from the clubs below us.

There have been a few changes to the squad with Aled Thomas returning at Full Back and Dale Ford moving to the wing replacing Osian Knott. Up front Torin Myhill returns to the front row with Thomas ball dropping to the bench. Jac Price returns from Wales U20 duty to take his place in the second row and Richard Bloomfield moving to Number 8, with Lewys Milling moving across to Openside Flanker.
