Obituary notice: Derek Lewis

If you take the trouble to read the rugby reports that appeared in the Carmarthen Journal in the 1950s and early 60s, one name – Derek Lewis – will continually crop up as the star of the previous Saturday’s game.

In one glowing report which carried his youthful photograph, he is described as “Carmarthen’s Superstar.”

He first played for the Quins as a 17-year-old before doing his National Service. He played regularly for his regiment and turned out for the Quins when on leave.

Many a player will look back on their career and remember the influence Derek had on the development of their own game. Whilst a gifted outside-half, he was also a talented centre. Together with his two brothers, they made up a very talented Quins back line.

Although he did turn out for other local clubs, Derek’s heart was always with the Quins where he finished playing what was a truly glittering rugby career.

For as long as he could, Derek never missed a home or away game and was a loyal member of the Quins Supporters Club.

All at Carmarthen Quins would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Derek’s family.
