Quins v Newport: Post-match reaction

Carmarthen Quins’ late fightback at Carmarthen Park, on Saturday 18th October, saw them secure a dramatic victory over Newport RFC.

Despite leading 21-7 early on in the second half, Quins allowed Newport back in the game, with the visitors going 21-26 ahead with just minutes left on the clock.

A Thomas Williams try and Elis Price conversion, right at the death, saw Quins secure a 28-26 victory.

Reflecting on the performance, and the win, Director of Rugby and Team Manager Steff Thomas said;

“We talked about it before the game, to be fair to Newport they came here on the back of four losses, four narrow and late losses, we knew they were going to be in the game right until the end, and we needed to do that today.

“We were 21-7 up and we let them back in, and that’s been the story of the last few weeks.

“Today, it was our turn. The boys stuck in there and kept their patience, stuck to the game plan, did all the things very well and we managed to get the result in the end.”

Having lost at the death a fortnight ago, away from home to Pontypool, in similar dramatic fashion, Quins had reflected and worked on how to close games out.

Steff went on to say;

“We talked openly about it. We talked about where our mindset was during certain points in the game. We looked at the errors, what caused the turn of momentum in games and if it happened again what we would do.

“I felt like we dealt with that today. We didn’t panic at any stage; we kept belief and faith in what we were trying to do. It was nice that the boys had applied themselves, taken on board some of those key learnings that we were able to get the good outcome in the end. It’s one for us this week.”
